Marks & Spencer has launched a jeroboam of prosecco – the biggest such bottle of the Italian fizz on the UK high street – for families and friends to share a super-sized Christmas or new year tipple.
The Monticella DOCG prosecco jeroboam contains the equivalent of four standard 75cl bottles – equivalent to 20 glasses.
M&S’s 75cl Monticella DOCG prosecco costs £15 and the jeroboam will be available in limited supplies for £45, allowing shoppers to in effect buy four bottles for the price of three.
“Prosecco has become the UK’s favourite sparkling wine, and we launched our 75cl Monticella DOCG prosecco last year to show the amazing quality that can be produced in this region,” said Dror Nativ, M&S wine buyer.
“It’s become one of our best-selling sparkling wines, proving that customers are happy to splash out a little more to enjoy this richer, more expressive style. This encouraged us to take the next step and introduce a jeroboam size – the ultimate dramatic bottle for impressing your guests at Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties this festive season.”
British shoppers spent more on prosecco than champagne this year, with the Italian becoming the fizz of choice for weddings, parties and even brunch. Slightly sweeter than champagne, it is a good match for cake, explaining its appearance on afternoon tea menus across London.
The UK thirst for prosecco shows no signs of slowing and at M&S sales were up 29% year on year to the end of September, having grown by 90% over two years.
While reports earlier in the year threatened a prosecco shortage, M&S insists it has enough stock to last until 2017.
The move is the latest in the trend towards large format bottles of prosecco for celebrations. Asda, Morrisons and Waitrose have also launched 150cl magnums.
