In fact, forecasts show many people will be having the warmest Christmas in their lifetime. “Warm as a lovely spring day,” is the phrase CityLab is using to describe Christmas for much of the eastern US, with “incredible” highs of 67 and 70 predicted on Christmas Eve in Washington DC and Atlanta respectively. After a relatively cool weekend, a weather pattern meteorologists are calling a “blowtorch” should start warming things right back up Christmas week by trapping warm air from the tropics, the Weather Channel reports.
By Tuesday, two-third of the country should be 10 to 20 degrees above their average high temperatures, the Weather Channel reports. And low temperatures Christmas Eve could be as much as 30 degrees above average. As for Christmas in the East, there’s a 90% chance it will be warmer than normal. Not only that, but a “slug of moisture” could bring rain and thunderstorms to harass holiday travelers, according to CityLab. The Weather Channel reports more than 2,400 record highs have already been tied or broken in the first half of December. And theWashington Post reports things are unlikely to cool down until at least the end of the month.
