DRIVERS using mobile phones will cop double demerit points for the first time during the Christmas holiday period, with the state government warning you are 20 times more likely to crash on the road if you text and drive.
Roads Minister Duncan Gay said that starting this Christmas, mobile phone offences will be added to double demerit periods and from next year, an existing demerit point will be added to the standard penalty of three points.
“You might think this a bit tough, I don’t give a damn. We’re deliberately making it tough, but if I save your life, I’ve done you a favour,” Mr Gay said.
“We are not increasing the fines, it is not about revenue for consolidated revenue, we’re just doing the demerit points at this stage.”
Last year 35,000 fines for driving and using a mobile were handed out — 20,000 less than last financial year.
Police Minister and Deputy Premier Troy Grant said the road toll was 317, an extra 34 deaths over this time last year.
“We need to take these measures because the community simply aren’t listening, and we make no apologies for being tough in this area,” Mr Grant said.
