Pre-employment screening | Association of European Investigators

You may be a recruiter, human resources professional, or manager who sources candidates. You would like to make informed hiring decisions. Here, you will learn about the employee background check and credential verification.

Jobs with certain duties or in specific industries may have education, certification, or licensure requirements. You may extend conditional job offers to candidates partly because of the candidates’ credentials. Performing background checks and further verifying the candidates’ credentials using education verification services may help avoid negligence in hiring.

Background Check

To run background checks, you would need to provide disclosures and get candidates’ consent by having them fill out background check authorization forms. Employee background checks may go back seven or ten years based on the jurisdiction. You may select various checks based on the candidates’ job requirements: social security number verification, previous employment verification, criminal records check, credit report check, professional licenses verification, education verification, drug testing, fingerprinting, driving records checks, and reference checks. If an applicant has expunged a record, it will no longer appear on background reports.

Credential Verification

Accurately verifying candidates’ education records may be time-consuming because of diploma mills and fake accrediting agencies. Candidates may get their diplomas and degrees fraudulently from organizations that offer diplomas and degrees, including verification for a fee. Candidates may attend institutions that forego typical educational rigor and standards required of degree-granting institutions accredited by accrediting agencies that the US Secretary of Education recognizes.

One place where you may verify nationwide high school diplomas, current post-secondary student enrollments, college degrees earned, and specific professional certifications & licensures held is the National Student Clearinghouse.

For foreign-educated candidates, legitimate institutions would be accredited by foreign accrediting agencies that the US Secretary of Education recognizes. You may determine the equivalency of foreign qualifications through credential evaluation services.

Filtering out candidates who misrepresent their credentials or backgrounds may help you select between qualified candidates with higher confidence.
